Subject: Roman Law

Important seventeenth-century legal work by the distinguished Savoyard jurist Antonio Fabri (Antoine Favre, 1557–1624), one of the notable scholars and commentators on Roman law of his period. Rationalia in primam et secundam partem Pandectarum is an extensive study devoted to the analysis, interpretation and systematic exposition of the Pandects or Digest of Justinian, one of the fundamental sources of Roman law and of the European civil-law tradition.

Fabri provides detailed commentary on the texts of the Digest, examining questions of legal interpretation, principles of Roman law, legal institutions, actions, obligations, rights and numerous controversies arising from the writings of the classical Roman jurists. His method combines close textual analysis of Roman sources with the legal reasoning characteristic of the European scholarly tradition of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

The work is an important example of pre-modern codification legal literature and illustrates the continuing influence of Roman law on the development of continental European legal science. 1631 edition, complete in five volumes, published in Lyon by Petrus and Jacobus Chouet. Due to its age, specialized legal content and historical importance, it is particularly appealing to collectors of early legal books, scholars of Roman law and historical civil-law collections.
